The Albert Chandler Hospital is located on the main campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexing- ton, Kentucky. The hospital’s history can be traced back to 1952, and today, this hospital has become famous for maternity specialties, cancer treatment, heart disease treatment, intensive care and drug research following many years of development. The new hospital has 17 floors, of which 8 floors are for nursing wards, and 4 floors for the D&T department. The other floors are for supporting facilities serving adjacent buildings and the hospital.
The building area of the new comprehensive building is nearly 120,000 square meters which includes medical functions and the supporting facilities. In order to satisfy the requirements for the patients and their families, the design includes a 1600 car parking garage, linkages to other areas of the medi-cal center, a generous and welcoming hotel like hospital entrance, shops, a library and a campus heating and cooling system. The nursing wards have 8 floors for 512 single bed rooms.
Designed to replace the current hospital, the new hospital was developed on an adjacent site linking together the new hospital with the Heart Center, the Children’s Hospital, the Critical Care Unit, andthe parking to support these functions. The new medical center entry at the hospital is a circle that connects the medical functions on one side of the main street with the parking and bus transportation on the other side.
